Block Chat - use TerminatorX v2
TerminatorX v2 can block chat applications including web-based chat.
If a selected (see the picture) chat site or program is started by a student or employee, it is shut down. Selecting which programs to stop is as easy as ticking a box during setup. Future nuisance programs can be added to TerminatorX's database when they start being a problem.
Students and employees are unaware that TerminatorX is operating - they just can't use the banned programs and web sites.

Monitoring attempts to access banned programs or web sites
You can find out who is trying to use programs or web sites that you have banned. TerminatorX Monitor shows 'Terminated' programs on a computer located anywhere on your network - for example a Technician's workstation. The details are shown in 'real time' as the attempts are made. This screenshot shows a typical view:
Clicking a list entry provides additional details. TerminatorX Monitor can be set to save the details in a .CSV (comma separated values) file which can be opened and viewed in Excel.
Ports for chat programs
Chat programs use a variety of port numbers. If you wish to block chat applications from your network by blocking ports, to can use the following list as a guide.
To....
- block AOL chat rooms - these use port 80, the web port and blocking it will stop web page access. TerminatorX has an pre-set setting for blocking AOL Chat rooms.
- block Chatterbox - perhaps stop ports 413, 414 and 416. Chatterbox can also be accessed as a web page, so blocking port 80 would stop it but at the same time prevent Internet Explorer from accessing web pages. TerminatorX is possibly your only choice.
- block dIRC - possibly stop ports 7777 and 29070
- block EasyIRC using port 6667 (probably)
- block Easy Message Express - ports unknown
- block ICQ stop ports 4000, 20000, 20019, 20029 and 20039
- block ICUII prevent access to ports 2000, 2019, 2038, 2050, 2051, 2069, 2085, 3010, 3030
- block mIRC stop ports 100, 101, 120, 121, 113, 130, 131, 132, 6667, 7000
- block MICA chat unknown port numbers
- block MSN Chat - this is not now required as the service has been discontinued.
- block Netmeeting - although Netmeeting is not really a chat program by the modern definition, it can become a nuisance in schools where the students spend time in private chats rather than paying attention. To Block Netmeeting you need to stop a wide range of ports as ports are allocated dynamically when a call is negotiated. TerminatorX is your only realistic choice.
- block Odigo - unknown port numbers. Note that Odigo now have a web based Chat and Messenger program. You would have to block port 80 to prevent it. TerminatorX can prevent access to it.
- block Paltalk you should stop ports 2090 and 2091, although Paltalk is available via a web site (see Odigo above)
- block Trillian - Trillian connects to other messenger (yahoo, ICQ, AIM and MSN) so you must block those ports - 80, 1863, 5050, 5190 and a dynamically allocated port) to successfully prevent Trillian. You will not successfully block port 80 and an unknown dynamically allocated port and still get web site access in Internet Explorer. TerminatorX can solve the problem.
- block VisualIRC by interrupting port 6667.
- block Yak by stopping port 258
