Block Yahoo Messenger - use TerminatorX v2

TerminatorX v2 can block Yahoo Messenger, Yahoo Web Messenger and many others on a school or company network.

- 28 day trial

220+ web sites and programs (see picture) are preset in TerminatorX for you to select during installation. TerminatorX runs invisibly and when one of the chosen programs is detected, TerminatorX shuts it down.

You can find out who is trying to use programs or web sites that you have banned. TerminatorX Monitor shows 'Terminated' programs on a computer located anywhere on your network - for example a Technician's workstation. The details are shown in 'real time' as the attempts are made. This screenshot shows a typical view:

Clicking a list entry provides additional details. TerminatorX Monitor can be set to save the details in a .CSV (comma separated values) file which can be opened and viewed in Excel.

If future programs or web sites become a problem, you can easily block them in a matter of minutes.

How to block Yahoo Messenger by blocking ports

According to Yahoo's website:

"Yahoo! Messenger will automatically search the firewall for an open port, and, if it finds one, use that to connect".

The order in which Yahoo Messenger scans for available ports is:

  1. port 5050
  2. port 80
  3. All available ports

This means that blocking Yahoo Messenger by blocking ports will not work. Yahoo Messenger will only switch ports and use a different one.

Even if you were able to block Yahoo Messenger by this method, your employees or students would just change to Yahoo Web Messenger - which is accessed as a web page in Internet Explorer or other browsers using port 80.

Other information from www.cyberphaze.net (not currently online) gave:

Yahoo! Messenger
Service: remote: port 5050, 5150, and 8000 local: 5101 and 1638
Audio: remote: 5001 local: 1644 and 5000
File transfer: remote: 1614 local: 80/81/82
Webcam: remote: 80 local: 1677

Y!Tunnel
Service: remote: 1455, 5050, 1071, and 1074 local: 8000, 8001, and 1073

Blocking Yahoo Web Messenger's port (80) will stop Internet Explorer showing any web sites.

Relax... let TerminatorX solve your problems for you
